- (1421–71)Monarch.Henry was the son of King Henry V of England and the French princess, Catherine of Valois. He inherited the throne of England as a baby and his reign was dominated by civil war in England (the Wars of the Roses) and the attempt to keep English possessions in France. Henry himself was a kindly, scholarly man who is primarily remembered for his contribution to education; he was the founder of Eton College and King’s College, Cambridge. Eventually he was deposed and died (probably murdered) in 1471. His tomb became a place of pilgrimage and there were attempts by his Lancastrian successor, Henry VII, to have him declared a saint.F.A. Gasquet, The Religious Life of King Henry VI (1923).
